The recent events of 2020 have resulted in major shifts in the way we live, work, and learn. These inevitable changes have intensified most homeowners’ desire to redesign their spaces, and setting up a viable homeschool space seems to be at the top of the list.

Homeschooling is one of the many challenges that parents across the globe didn’t plan for this year. And it becomes exceptionally difficult when there are two or more students involved, as most homes aren’t set up for it. But even if your children are already back in school (or doing distance learning part-time), the time that we’ve spent at home during this pandemic has taught us that having a stylish and beautiful home isn’t enough– it has to function well, too! So, here are four simple tips on how you can achieve JUST THAT:

Choose the right area

One of the key steps to succeed in homeschooling is to find the right spot for learning. Consider your child’s age and how much space and supervision they’ll require. Choose a visible, dedicated workstation for each child that’s out of high-traffic areas in the house, and make sure that it will be able to accommodate the activities that they’ll be doing for the school year. Most design experts recommend setting up a study space outside a child’s bedroom, but if you’ve got an older child who needs more privacy, re-designing their room to marry style and function is also an option. Make sure that their desks have appropriate task lighting– a table lamp or sconces placed above the learning area are advisable.

Create thoughtfully-organized zones within your learning space

Flexible seating is an easy way to infuse a pop of style and playfulness in your child’s learning area. Create multiple, curated areas for your child and allow him to choose where he feels comfortable doing different activities. Provide your child with more than one spot to work and see his comfort levels rise as he makes the most out of his space.

Flexible furniture is a must

Shop for adjustable desks and stylish, ergonomic chairs that can accommodate your growing child. It’s also best to go for double-duty furniture like ottomans and benches with storage that you can use to hide supplies and books when not in use. You can also avoid piles of clutter on the floor by putting in some bookshelves and make the most out of your vertical space.

Maximize your space

Not everyone is blessed with a spacious home, and if you’re one of the many homeowners whose dining room is the home’s command center, you may want to pair your dining table’s chairs with some counter stools or benches, so your child can choose his seat based on the activities he’ll be doing for the day. You can also change your chair fabric to a wipeable option to hold off wear and tear.

In choosing supplies, clear lidded containers are best for younger kids, so it’s easier for them to put things away. Natural rattan baskets, on the other hand, are the perfect storage for older children, as it adds an organic touch to a room and has enough space for books, pens, and supplies.

Always remember that our spaces have a noticeable impact on our moods, and it can affect our children’s confidence levels, too! So make sure to involve your children in choosing the design of their homeschool space to ensure a no-brainer, learning haven they’ll more likely feel good in.
